Shrewsbury Abbey was prior to the Reformation a very large and wealthy house of the Benedictine Order.   What remains is only a small part of the original.

The Abbey is the location of the fictional Brother Cadfael books written by Ellis Peters / Edith Pargeter.

Local legend has it that in the 1960s a tunnel was found running the entire distance from Shrewsbury Abbey to Haughmond Abbey, some twelve miles away (see below).
